derek shit

Yeah yeah, so there is so much shit to do. I just sound like a god damned scratched record skipping dont I. Well fuck it. It's the truth. But i have worked on my grammar a little bit. But not the cussing. Well  I've been working non-stop for the last month. I havent had time to do shit. But now i dont work 40 hours a week anymore. I'm just down to 20 so that shit gives me a lot more time to do things I want. God damn there isnt shit to do. Snowboarding is fun. But hell that costs money unless you want to walk up and down a hill for hours. Fuck that shit in the ass. So I heard from an undisclosed person that Phobia might be playing a show around here within six months. Fuck yeah. Motherfucking Phobia. Aint that shit gonna rock like someones face and a baseball bat with razor wire on it. God damn i hope that shit follows though cause I dont want to get everyones hopes up for nothing. So if I get any new info I will pass it on.

It's the time of the year to spend money on all the poeple you know.....well like enough to spend money on them. But I know most anyone who reads this hates the season but still participates in the buying of product for people. I am one of them especially. So shit if your gonna participate you mind as well have fun. So I decided to fun at other peoples expence when I was buying shit for people. Well me and Nikole had fun. She was acting like she was deaf and i was over reacting and flipping out saying i cant understand your sign language. That turned a few heads in disgust.  I'm sure you can come up with your own ideas. Being broke as fuck sucks too cause that makes you resort to finding other ways to get presents for people. sure im not gonna say them cause well THEY ARE WATCHING US!!!!!!!!!! so i think im just gonna leave it to your imagination. Making shit is cool,m and i dont mean by eating stuff and waiting a day for it to finish baking in the good old oven. Even though that vacuum sealed poo was funny as hell bleeding like a fresh animal on the grill of a second generation hummer. But anyway, mix-tapes are kick ass cause it actually takes time and effort and sometimes sweat. to make. Burning cd's is just something you do cause your bored. God i sound pathetic i think im gonna stop now before i get my ass kicked. how a bout this. just go get a can of spray paint and some fat and thin caps and some gloves for everyone. cause im sure thats what they want us to write in these here columns. Yep im talking to you officer. HAHA!!

so on to the part where i babble about shows coming up. too bad I sound like a spokesman for the daac when i do this. but its all good.   @ the daac.
ummmmm hombrinus dudes are playing with a disease called man at the daac on december 28th. five bear traps on your leg, not sure when it starts. but im sure its 8 like all of the others.            yeah so on January 3 we got loaded for bear (we konw what they do), pizza party (chaotic grindcore) i guess that is what they sound like. 5 boners, starts at 7 @ the daac.             then on January 4 we got Piedmonster, Rick Johnson Rock n Roll Machine, Paul Baribeau, Panacea. im sure its gonna be five smacks in the face with a brick. so dont quote me just in case its six. or what ever the fuck they charge.
so i am about done wasting your time.

Hey guys, sorry I've been slacking a bit. Actually, I haven't been slacking
at all up here in the sticks. I was transfered into a new department at
work, which has ment a fuck load more hours, and a lot less time to do anything. I hope that the few of you that were able to make it out to the Sunday show had as much fun as I did. The BILL BONDSMEN fucking owned. I promise, I'm not just saying that because Tony let me sing along to their cover of "Amphetamine Addiction" (ZERO BOYS). Speaking of which, I was exstatic to find out the day after the Sunday show that the FUCKING ZERO BOYS will be doing another show this year. On the 30th in Chicago. This trumps all previous plans I had made, since the ZERO BOYS are the best live band I've ever seen. Ever. They're older than most of your parents, but live sound as good, if not better, than "VICIOUS CIRCLE" did the first time I listened to it. I can not express how excited I am to see them again without sounding like a slobbering goon. I suppose I'm alright with that. Other than that, it's been all work and absolutly no play for the Jess-ay. I have been listening to a lot of records, and trying to get mix tapes done for Christmas. I have a list that need to be mailed out, but Christmas is going to have to come late to my friends around the world. I'll get them done before long though. I love making mix tapes. It's such a lost art. Most people just throw some MP3's on a disk, and call it good. That has no soul. A good mix tape tells a story. It brings you up, and down, and if you're lucky.. back up again. And next to vinyl, it's the best recorded sound I think a punk rock band can have.
See you all on Christmas night. And I didn't forget about the alphabet.
Here's E.

E is for: Exploding Hearts

I just can't write about the Exploding Hearts without feeling huge pangs of regret that, tragically, three of the members are dead. On Sunday July 20, 2003, hardly a year after there first release "Guitar Romantic", frontman Adam Cox, drummer Jeremy Gage and bassist Matt Fitzgerald were killed in a car accident coming back from a show in San Francisco. I had at that time owned the album for maybe a week, and couldn't get it out of my cd player.

The members of the Exploding Hearts were hardly in their twenties, just about to get signed to a bigger deal, and had just released an album that is nearly uncomparable. Candy sweet and perfect. It still amazes me that this band didn't have radio hits. Maybe they were before there time. Maybe they were too late. Then they had to go and die. Maybe the blame lies with those who chose to not wear their seatbelt. Maybe people shouldn't be looking to blame anyone. The accident was a tragedy in it's truest sense. A fantastic band was ended, lives were ended, and we have ten songs, and ten songs only, to remember what was, and ponder on what could have been. The Exploding Hearts could have/should have been huge. But it's too late to think about things like that.
I'd rather think about how the album makes me feel. Young. That love maybe is really out there. The songwriting on "Guitar Romantic" is just plain good, and the songs have an honesty that makes it clear why they weren't on top 40 radio.
The Exploding Hearts were a pop band, but a pop band with a bite. I have a tendancy to listen to an album over and over when I really like, then get sick of it and shelf it. In the years since I first bought "Guitar Romantic", I've yet to get sick of it. It's an album that I've listened to frequently for almost two years but of which I have yet to get sick of. Just as tragic to me, is that the only member of the band to not lose his life- Terry Six, the guitarist- has rode the coattails of his bands demise. His new band, Nice Boys, try to be the Exploding Hearts. It's obvious that the true talent in that band died. I was told before hearing them that Nice Boys sounded like Rod Stewart. Personally, I think Rod would be pissed if he had heard such a comment. They suck. They suck big, and are a huge let down. I'd almost buy their shit, just to burn it.
Well, another band that I'll never get to see. Lives ended too soon. A band that could have put out more great music than I even want to think of. It's strange to think that there album, which was soo full of life, is all I'll ever know of them. All I can do is enjoy what we have, and wish that time could be turned back.

Until later

updates have been slow. working more for west michigan, mid michigan... i'd love some detroit contacts... fuck. i don't know what i'm doing anymore. i feel like the pie has lost a lot of magic. i'd like to change that- any suggestions?

the following is just regurrgitated from last week, but the shows are stil current.

i've been here since july and only know one person- joe (forever youth). he happened to move here too. he's having a couple basement shows this month:

  1 more

-i'm hoping to make it to those, even though what little money i do manage to scrape up is used to get back and forth from here to muskegon and back a couple times a week for band practices and shows and what not. fucking money.... and even though i manage, i'll bet that nobody from muskegon is at those shows...fuckers.

i've been reading a lot this past week. i read the family by ed sanders, and then i read th intros and extra chapters in the updated second version. i read me talk pretty one day, a collection of essays by david sedaris, which is really funny. and now i am getting into bird by bird by anne lamont. the last two were bronwen's suggestions, and great suggestions they have been. after bird by bird, i am planning to start my own book. and as far as reading goes, next up is manson in his own words. if you are thinking about writing, bird by bird would be an excellent book to read before you start!

as far as art goes, i've got a block in my head. what a blockhead. a couple paintings in the works, but not much. i've only done a handful of paintings this year, and nothing that i am that thrilled with. ahh- a couple are alright i guess. although i haven't put them up yet on my art site, dvntarts.com.
